How to Lower Your LDL Cholesterol

With marinara sauce!

yes, it's TRUE.

Why? Lycopene!

It works to lower your cholesterol -- at least your LDLs

So, don't just use a good marinara on pasta...put it on warm breads, pizza (of course), even over meats... to add a fun taste and to help your heart stay healthy!

Don't like marinara (or tomatoes) -- try a supplement with a healthy dose of lycopene!

Suggestions on Winter Vitamins

Ok, so I know I usually post about what's working for me in the vitamin department. I know I use Vitamin C and b12 in the Winter for colds, etc.

But, I'm wondering what else is out there that works...what else can I use to combat sore throat, mild aches, and the colds that come with cooler weather?

How do you slow down aging?

With lemon juice!

A natural way to slow down the aging effects of animal-derived foods. Such foods contain compounds which contribute to the aging process -- but lemon juice helps break down those compounds.

So, whether it's beef, chicken, pork or even fish - add a squeeze or two of lemon juice while you cook to help slow the aging process.

How to Have More Energy

If you want more energy - especially as the weather turns cooler and the sun shines less, you may need a vitamin boost.

Here's how I get more energy.

First, I normally take a 500 mcg b12 pill every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday morning. I do this to get an extra boost of energy on those days and to keep me running smooth -- I also do it for its metabolic enhancing benefits.

Last week, however, I noticed problems with a sore throat/infection. I started taking b12 everyday. Not only did my throat feel better fast, but also I've had MUCH more energy. I'm going to bed at 11 and getting up by 5 (normally, it'd be 10:30 and 6). And I feel great.

Plus, I'm maintaining a good weight in spite of some Holiday eating.

The other addition is Vitamin D. You don't get as much when its not sunny out -- so, you need MORE. I've probably taken one every other day -- but, it seems to be both helping my throat issue AND making me feel better overall.

So, if you need some energy and maybe a metabolic boost, try some b12.

How to Cure a Throat Infection

The simple answer: A flood of vitamins.

More specifically, Vitamin C.

I noticed my head felt foggy and I had that achey, I'm getting a cold feeling on Tuesday of last week.

I took some extra C and went on with my planned travel. I also was able to get a bit of extra rest thanks to my schedule.

But, by Friday, I had a tickle in my throat that I feared meant trouble. Sure enough, on Saturday morning, I woke to a sore throat that was very red and irritated. Thankfully, no fever. But, clearly, an infection that could have gotten worse.

Instead, I drank a second glass of Cranberry-Grape Juice (120% of your daily allowance of C in a single glass) and took a B12 (I usually only take B12 on Monday/Wednesday/Friday for an energy boost).

About two hours later, I took a chewable Vitamin C supplement and a Vitamin D3. You don't get enough Vitamin D in winter (lack of sun) and most people are Vitamin D deficient anyway. So, I took the extra D as an immune system booster -- knowing that C and D together could help fight off the infection.

Again on Saturday night, I took a chewable C and a Vitamin D pill.

I woke on Sunday with a much milder throat infection. By today, I'm feeling fine. A hint of redness, but my body is responding and fighting back.

This is the type of infection that can give your body fits for a week or more. But, with vitamins and some rest, I've managed to relegate it to a mere weekend inconvenience.

Biotin...

I think it is helping me keep my hair. I'm not sure, but it does seem to be growing pretty fast... not much "new" coverage, really...but the hair I have grows at a very healthy rate which helps establish and maintain decent coverage...so, that's a plus.

I take it 2-3 times a day.

Peppermint Oil for your Hair?

That's one of the ingredients in Nioxin Scalp Treatment. It is supposed to "invigorate" your scalp.

There's no indication in medical research I've reviewed to suggest it helps your hair grow -- but it is indicated for skin itchiness... It is also indicated as a treatment for headaches. Plus, it smells nice, so maybe that's why it's in there?

Monday, November 21, 2011

Fight Colds?

With what?

I used B12 and Vitamin C.

When I feel a cold coming on, I am certain to take an extra dose of Vitamin C and I take a B12 in the mornings to give me more energy and boost immunity.

I take plenty of fish oil regularly and suspect this is helpful in keeping my body working.

I'd rather take B12 and C than "cold medicines" unless I really need to fight the horrible symptoms.

What's in MagnaRx? Pumpkin!

yes... Pumpkin!

Maybe it is for the Vitamin A? Or maybe b/c it fights colon cancer...so, keeps you healthy? Nothing I found indicates it helps with blood flow.

Anyone out there reading this have experience with MagnaRx?

Does MagnaRx Work?

Vitamins and Hair Loss?

So, I take Biotin to make my hair healthier and to keep it growing. There's also biotin in Nioxin, a shampoo product that is supposed to help make your scalp healthy and create the conditions for healthy hair growth. I think it seems to work.

My question is: What other vitamins/supplements should/could a man take to help preserve his hair? Are there any natural ways to "grow" hair?

Friday, October 7, 2011

Diabetic? Try some straberries...

that's what this research suggests. The chemical Fisetin is in the red berries.... and it helps your kidneys and brain. But yeah, you need 37 berries a day to reap the benefit, so eat up until a supplement comes around.

Monday, October 3, 2011

What's in MagnaRx? Stinging Nettle

Male enhancement product MagnaRx includes the plant Stinging Nettle.

This plant is indicated as a pain reliever and has been used to treat arthritis pain.

It is also indicated for men to treat BPH - -and perhaps that's why it is in MagnaRx -- prostate health is key to good sexual function, so perhaps the theory is that a little nettle can help move you in the right direction.

It is also a diuretic.

Friday, September 30, 2011

Fish Oil. Omega-3 fatty acids...eat some salmon, tuna, etc. And/or take fish oil supplements and feel better!

Molasses: Vitamin-packed sweetener!

Yep! If you like molasses, you're in luck! Made from sugarcane, it packs plant-power with iron, calcium, and polyphenols.

What's in MagnaRx? Pygeum

What is pygeum? And why is it in a popular male enhancement product?

Well, it is supposed to help with prostate function -- the prostate is key to good sexual health, so perhaps that's the thinking.

My research indicates it usually doesn't have much benefit in younger men...but can help older men (50+) with prostate health issues -- it's more preventive than anything else. So, if you're under 50, the possible benefits of pygeum would seem minimal.

MagnaRx does seem to have its fair share of good ingredients that generally benefit a man's sexual performance and health.

I suppose it is quite possible that taking the recommended dose (which I believe is 2 pills daily) could result in benefits over time. If you go this route, take 1 pill in the morning and 1 in the evening.

This should NOT be mistaken for a "one-time" performance enhancer. You need to get the assortment of supplements in your system to get the benefits over time.

Of course, you may simply be able to enhance one particular deficiency (say L-Arginine) and get similar benefits with regular dosing.

GO NUTS to help with Blood Sugar

NUTS! They help your blood sugar. They taste great. And they are GOOD for you.

Remember, tackling your diabetes (or keeping yourself from getting it) is a great way to improve blood flow and vascular function. This has all sorts of benefits...

Drink Tea, Be Young!

That's the deal. three cups of tea a day help keep your cells young...

So, drink tea...green tea, regular tea, hot tea. Drink it!!!

Thursday, September 1, 2011

What's in MagnaRx? Asian Ginseng

no surprise there! Ginseng promotes energy and blood flow -- both keys to strong sexual performance. Yes, it is an herbal supplement...but it seems to work and most studies/articles indicate it does boost blood flow in a positive way. Sure, it can cause nausea ... and if that happens to you, you may wish to stop taking it. But, in the low-ish dose it is in with MagnaRx, you may be ok.

Of course, if you are generally healthy and just want a boost, you may want to try ginseng -- it is a great energy booster and it seems to stimulate stronger sexual function, so using it alone may be a less expensive way to get a slight boost in performance.

Folic Acid (and real Folate) Fights Cancer

Monday, August 29, 2011

What's in MagnaRx? Oyster Meat!

yep, it's got oyster meat in it.

However, the available research does not make totally clear why this would be. Sure, we've all heard about oysters and their ability to increase your libido. But can a small dose of oyster meat powder really help?

Possibly. It has been shown to have heart healthy benefits -- that is, helping lower cholesterol. And, improved bloodflow is a key to performance.

If blood vessels are dilated (another claim of some about oyster meat) then bloodflow can be improved thus improving sexual performance, perhaps.

I'm guessing that's why the team over at MagnaRx included it in their formula.

Peanut Butter Makes you HAPPY!

and not just because it tastes GREAT...but b/c it has the right kind of fat!

Thursday, August 18, 2011

What's in MagnaRx? Cayenne Fruit!

Why?

Why does popular male enhancement supplement MagnaRx include Cayenne Fruit?

I've written previously about Cayenne Fruit and its weight loss benefits. A quick search reveals many, many reports that suggest Cayenne Fruit can boost metabolism. My own personal experience suggests it does create a warming sensation and has promoted weight maintenance.

I can find little evidence to suggest it supports erectile function.

I'm guessing the energy and boosted metabolism is a benefit -- and perhaps this "warming" helps the body's bloodflow.

It's not clear. But it is in MagnaRx.

Rice Bran for the right Kind of Vitamin E

yep, Rice Bran Oil apparently has a special type of Vitamin E...and you may just want it!

You Need Selenium (Unless you WANT to get Old)

Even minor deficiencies in selenium can cause major problems, so says a study cited by RealAge. Cancer, heart diseases, dementia...ugh!

Monday, August 8, 2011

Omega-3 -- get it in Canola, protect your Colon!

so says RealAge -- and yet another amazing benefit of Omega-3 fatty acids!

b12 and Cayenne Fruit for Weight Loss

I take one 500 mcg b12 supplement every Monday/Wednesday/Friday to promote metabolism.

On the weekends, I tend toward supplementing with Cayenne Fruit. Cayenne is known to boost metabolism ...and, in my experience, it works. I will warn: if you have sensitive bowels, it can be uncomfortable at first. But, as your body adjusts, you will notice results -- it essentially 'warms' your body, boosting metabolism by making it work harder to keep cool.

Some people pay a bunch of $ for b12 shots... I just buy the pills at about $4.00 a bottle and take them a couple days a week to keep my body humming along!

Tuesday, August 2, 2011

Vitamins for Hair!

Ok, so I take Biotin to help combat hair loss... does it work? Is it helping? I'm not sure.

My question is: what other vitamins might one take to help fight hair loss and/or strengthen/thicken existing hair.

I don't want to go bald until I have to... if at all ...

Tuesday, July 19, 2011

What's in MagnaRx? Oat Straw

Oats! Yep, there are oats in MagnaRx. Some preliminary research suggests oats have many health benefits -- lowering cholesterol and helping lower blood sugar. Nothing indicates that it helps with erections... BUT, lower cholesterol and blood sugar could help with blood flow. Plus, there are NO side effects... so, eat some oats!

Monday, July 11, 2011

Papaya (and other Carotenoid-rich foods) to Fight Wrinkles

What's in MagnaRx?

Maca!

It seems it does work...at least in animals. And to some extent, in humans.

Here's more.

Horny Goat Weed

It's in MagnaRx -- but, what does it do?

here's an excerpt from Discovery Health: And while the exact way that horny goat weed works remains unknown, the plant has long been employed to restore sexual fire, boost erectile function, allay fatigue and alleviate menopausal discomfort.

sounds promising...

Some Docs Say Vitamin C doesn't work...

here's their story.

But, from personal experience, I don't believe them!

I take C -- and take a "booster" dose when I feel a cold coming on -- and I almost always recover quickly. So, keep on taking C - especially when your cold symptoms hit!

Mushrooms to fight colds

yes, even in the summer, you can get a cold. But, here's one way to fight it!

Thursday, June 23, 2011

MagnaRx

one ingredient is L-Arginine, which I've discussed before on this blog.

Arginine is supposed to help your body make nitric oxide, critical for blood flow -- and of course, strong blood flow is key to a strong erection

so, that's one ingredient.

Stay tuned - and we'll see what else is in MagnaRx

Of course, if you've used the product and have something to share, SHARE!

Nioxin: Can it Help You Keep Your Hair?

Well, maybe. According to the text on the bottles, "9 out of 10 users perceive a thickening effect"

But what does that mean? I have had people from Nioxin tell me that the product does not claim to help grow hair. But it does supposedly create the conditions for a healthy scalp -- which should slow or prevent hair loss.

I have had several hair professionals tell me that they have seen clients grow hair with Nioxin (by using the entire system -- cleanser, scalp therapy, and scalp treatment).

So, what's in it?

Biotin, for one. But, does it work?

I'm not sure what butterbur is, but supposedly, it can help relieve nasal allergy symptoms.

Though the folks at RealAge caution that it may cause liver problems.

Monday, May 23, 2011

Vitamin C

not bad... in fact, it's good. But I find it causes heartburn from time to time. Ugh.

Wednesday, May 18, 2011

L-Arginine and Vitamin C

a winning combination for blood flow...but can it help with hair loss?

that's a question i have!

Because, the combination -- 2000 mg of Vitamin C (taken in 500 mg doses 4 times a day) and 2 500mg pills of arginine taken 2-3 times a day can definitely stimulate blood flow.

And if blood is flowing, is it bringing nutrients to your head...thus stimulating hair growth?

I'm not sure...but I want to find out.

Tuesday, May 17, 2011

Arginine

What does it do?

BLOOD FLOW!

That's the main thing.

There are many other benefits.

Among them, an alleged help for erectile dysfunction - -though l-arginine alone may not be enough.

There are also some risks -- including some mild side effects like nausea and diarrhea -- and more serious problems for some people.

The risks seem to be minimal, but you should definitely consult your physician to see if this is right for you.

Fighting Colds

with vitamin C

So yeah... there's a cold going around my house again.

I felt it in my throat last night... took 1000 mg of Vitamin C before bed... took 500 mg plus my normal cranberry juice this morning.

Added a b12 pill to that.

Should help me keep the cold at bay!

Wednesday, May 11, 2011

Too Much Vitamin C

Yes, it is possible.

More than 2,000 mg a day can be too much, apparently.

Omega-3 -- Good News, Few Risks

So, after I posted about Omega-3 fatty acids for kids yesterday, I wondered about any risks.

Here's a report from WebMD about Omega-3 fatty acids.

The short answer is: very limited risk. Lots of positive benefits.

And: ASK your doctor about appropriate dosing. I took it at my doctor's direction about a year ago and lowered my triglycerides by 10 points over 6 months. Good news for me!

So, be wise -- but eat more fish and get more Omega-3 into your diet. It's good for your heart!

Vitamin C and B12 to avoid a VIRUS

yep!

My daughter, then my wife had a respiratory virus this week.

As soon as we returned from the doctor, I took a dose of Vitamin C and a B12.

I took 2-3 Vitamin C doses (500 mg) a day and one b12 each morning.

My wife also got sick -- but I have remained reasonably fine. A little minor congestion -- but nothing like what they are experiencing.

Tuesday, January 25, 2011

Fish Oil

YUCK!

it works, it seems, to help with cholesterol

But just before a run (and that was my mistake) I took some this weekend.

and the burps burned. and my stomach strained.

ouch.

Take it with a meal and give yourself some time to absorb before you exercise.

b12 for weight loss

i've taken b12 in pill form off and on for energy -- if i have a particularly long night and i'm tired in the morning, a b12 can help me pep up for the morning.

but i saw an ad in the paper recently promising b12 injections that helped you lose weight... is the energy boost also helping me burn calories? maybe so.

i know it helps in 30 minutes or so after I take it in terms of feeling "up" and ready for my day.

Hair Loss and Vitamins

What vitamins help with hair loss?

I've been taking Biotin for this purpose -- 1 in the morning and 1 at night. It seems to help. Also, I noticed that there is biotin in the Nioxin shampoo I use to help my scalp -- Nioxin does NOT claim to grow hair -- it does claim to create healthy scalp conditions which can enable hair growth. I think it is helping my hair look thicker and fuller, which is helpful when your hairline is receding.

cinnamon
